Oslo, 13 January (H.S.): Norway Chess, one of the world's most prestigious chess tournaments, is set to enter a new era with its move to Oslo in 2026 after 13 years in Stavanger. From 2026, both Norway Chess and the Norway Chess Women tournaments will be staged in the Norwegian capital, with Deichman Bjørvika serving as the main venue. The elite event will be played from May 25 to June 5, featuring chess legend Magnus Carlsen among the participants.
Launched in 2013, Norway Chess has been permanently hosted in Stavanger, a city that has given the event a distinct identity and helped cement its place as a key fixture on the international chess calendar. Stavanger's role has been central to the tournament's growth and global reputation.
Norway Chess founder and CEO Kjell Madland praised Stavanger's contribution, saying that without the support and cooperation of all political parties in the city, the tournament could not have reached its current stature. He highlighted the historic role of the city in developing Norway Chess Women, where prize money has been equal to that of the men's event, and expressed gratitude to local sponsors and volunteers for helping write an important chapter in Norwegian sports history.
Looking ahead to Oslo, Norway Chess COO Benedikte Vestre Skog said the move to the capital will bring greater international visibility. “Oslo is a global meeting point, and establishing Norway Chess here will allow us to reach a broader audience, partners, and young chess enthusiasts,” she noted.
Madland added that Stavanger will always remain part of Norway Chess's identity, but that Oslo is the natural next step to elevate the tournament further on the world stage.Deichman Bjørvika's head librarian Merete Lie welcomed the decision to host Norway Chess 2026 at the library. She said they are proud to serve as the venue and excited to fill the historic building with chess players, spectators, and curious visitors.
Former world number one Magnus Carlsen has officially confirmed his participation in Norway Chess 2026. The remaining line-ups for both the main event and Norway Chess Women will be announced in the coming weeks. The 2026 edition will be the 14th Norway Chess tournament and the third Norway Chess Women event. Carlsen has played in every edition so far and has lifted the Norway Chess title seven times.
