Howrah, 12 January (H.S.): An elderly woman died after being burned while warming herself by a fire to ward off the cold on Sunday night in North Howrah. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but doctors declared her dead.

According to local sources, the deceased has been identified as Radharani Saw (80). She lived alone on the ground floor of a very old house near Pilkhana More on GT Road. Around 8 pm on Sunday night, a fire suddenly broke out in her house, and she was severely burned.

On information, two fire engines arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control. The severely burned elderly woman was immediately taken to Howrah District Hospital, where doctors on duty declared her dead.

The police from Golabari police station arrived at the scene. North Howrah MLA Gautam Chowdhury also visited the site. Initially, it was suspected that the fire might have started while she was cooking, but later, neighbors reported that Radharani Saw was warming herself by a fire inside her house using paper and wood to protect herself from the cold. The fire spread, leading to the tragic incident.

According to police sources, the elderly woman suffered from several age-related illnesses and was also somewhat mentally unwell. The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
