Kolkata, 10 January (H.S.): On May 1, 2023, BJP booth president Vijay Krishna Bhuiyan was abducted from his home and brutally murdered, triggering widespread outrage. In connection with the case, the victim’s wife, Lakshmirani Bhuiyan, had lodged an FIR against 34 individuals. Following recent developments, the area witnessed renewed tension on Saturday.

Considering the sensitivity of the case and its political implications, the Calcutta High Court had handed over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Since then, the NIA has been continuously investigating the matter and arresting the accused one by one. In this connection, on Saturday, the NIA arrested Trinamool Congress worker Swapan Bhowmik from Dashgram area under Sabang police station in East Midnapore district. The agency claimed that he had a direct role in the murder and that sufficient evidence exists against him. He has been taken to Kolkata for questioning.

According to NIA sources, some other accused, including Buddhadev Mandal and Kamal Khutia, are still absconding. So far, a total of 17 people have been arrested in connection with this murder, and the investigation is ongoing.

Notably, on May 1, 2023, BJP booth president Vijay Krishna Bhuiyan was abducted and murdered near his home in Goramahal village of Bakcha Panchayat area in Mayna.
