Leh, 10 January (H.S.): Capt Jerry Prem Raj, VrC Suru Valley Archery Competition, 2026 (Winters) was inaugurated today at Mini Stadium, Sankoo (Kargil) under the aegis of Fire and Fury Corps. The opening ceremony witnessed a display of unity, sportsmanship and cultural pride by the people of Suru Valley, thereby encouraging youth empowerment and nation building. The event is aimed at promoting traditional form of Archery in Ladakh, encourage youth participation, strengthen civil-military cooperation and provide a competitive platform for local athletes to develop their skills.

The traditional sporting event is being conducted by the Indian Army, as part of Operation Sadbhavana, in coordination with the Ex-Serviceman fraternity and local communities of Block Sankoo (Kargil) from 10 to 17 January 2026. Traditionally known as Dah-fangs and Dar-tses, Archery is not only a sport, but also a social and a cultural tradition. Participants indulge in age-old customs, from marking arrows with special feathers to maintaining the Tsagey (Bull’s Eye), as a symbol of victory over adversity.

This year, the event has witnessed an overwhelming response, with approximately 900 archers participating from 62 villages of Kargil Region, making it one of the largest sports event in the region. The competition will be conducted in a Pool system of matches and Closing Ceremony is scheduled on 17 January 2026. The event will serve as a platform for the archers to showcase their talent, revive traditional customs and promote sportsmanship among the youth of Ladakh.
