Thiruvananthapuram , 10 Jan (H.S.): Kerala is likely to experience rainfall till Tuesday due to the influence of a severe low-pressure system that has intensified over the southwest Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected across various parts of the State over the next two days. The weather system, which has strengthened into a severe depression, is currently moving in a north-westward direction and is expected to make landfall by Monday afternoon over northern Sri Lanka, between Trincomalee and Jaffna.
Meteorologists noted that the impact of this system, combined with another cyclonic circulation positioned over the southeast Arabian Sea near southern Kerala, is responsible for the prevailing wet weather conditions in the State. The interaction of these two systems is expected to sustain rainfall activity, particularly over southern and central Kerala.
While widespread heavy rainfall is not currently forecast, isolated spells of rain may occur intermittently, especially during late evening and early morning hours. The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, as sudden showers could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and minor disruptions to daily activities.
Sea conditions along the Kerala coast are also likely to remain moderately rough due to the prevailing atmospheric disturbances. Fisherfolk have been advised to exercise caution while venturing into the sea and to strictly follow updates and advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities.
Weather officials clarified that the system is not expected to intensify into a cyclone affecting Kerala directly. However, continuous monitoring is underway, and further advisories will be issued if there are significant changes in its movement or intensity. The IMD has urged the public to stay informed through official weather bulletins.
