Biting Cold Persists Across Odisha; Bhubaneswar Records Coldest Night in 22 Years


Bhubaneswar, 10 January (H.S.): A severe cold wave continues to grip Odisha, with minimum temperatures plunging below 10°C in at least 22 locations across the state. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, recorded a minimum temperature of 9.2°C, marking its coldest night in 22 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This is the lowest temperature recorded in the city since 2004. A day earlier, the mercury had settled at 9.4°C.

Rourkela emerged as the coldest city in the state over the past 24 hours, registering a minimum temperature of 4.1°C. It was followed by Jharsuguda at 4.5°C, while Phulbani and Angul recorded 6°C each.

Cuttack also experienced intense cold conditions, with the temperature dropping to 9°C. Several other parts of the state reported minimum temperatures below 10°C, including Balasore (9.9°C), Baripada (8.8°C), Keonjhar (7.4°C), Sambalpur (9.4°C), Sundargarh (6.8°C), Hirakud (9.9°C), Bhawanipatna (8.2°C), Balangir (9.5°C), Koraput (9.8°C), Sonepur (9.3°C), Daringibadi (6.5°C), Boudh (9.8°C), Dhenkanal (7.7°C), Bargarh (9.8°C) and Nabarangpur (7.5°C).

The IMD has forecast that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist over the next two weeks due to the continued influx of dry and cold northerly winds. Severe cold conditions are expected to continue until January 11.

In view of the prevailing weather situation, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for five districts—Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Cuttack, Khurda and Angul. Residents have been
