
Hooghy, 10 January (H.S.): The police from Tarakeshwar police station in Hooghly district arrested a thug with a firearm and ammunition on Friday night. The police are continuously conducting raids to apprehend his accomplices.
As per information, on Thursday, three thugs entered a tea stall in Chapadanga area of Tarakeshwar, intimidated the shopkeeper, and extorted money from him. Allegedly, the same thugs then showed a pistol to a truck driver and robbed him of several thousand rupees. Complaints regarding both incidents were filed at Tarakeshwar police station on Friday.
Based on the complaints, Tarakeshwar police began an investigation and arrested a young man named Atanu Maity from Astara Charkatala area on Friday night. During a search, a 7 mm pistol and two rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.
According to the police, the accused, Atanu Maity, has several criminal cases registered against him, including theft and robbery, and has been arrested before. His house is in the Ranabandh area of Naita Malpaharpur Gram Panchayat in Tarakeshwar.
The police produced the accused before the Chandannagar Sub-Divisional Court on Saturday, seeking police custody. Hooghly Rural Police DSP (Headquarters) Sabyasachi Ghosh said, A complaint of robbery at gunpoint was received. During the investigation, one accused has been arrested, and the search for the others is ongoing.
