Kochi, 01 January(HS): The CPI, the poor cousins of the CPI(M), is getting ready to cross over to the Congress-led UDF camp. The first media meet addressed by Binoy Viswam, the Kerala CPI’s general secretary on Wednesday gave enough hints of his outfit dumping Pinarayi Vijayan and company and move over to the Congress-led UDF.

There is a strong anti-incumbency feeling against the LDF government, and this was reflected in the results of the Local Self Government Instotution election held last month. The voters are totally frustrated with the performance of the LDF Government,” said Viswam, known for his hatred towards Hindus as well as Pinarayi Vijayan.

Though he did not name Vijayan directly, it was clear that his innuendos were targeted at the chief minister. Viswam has been allergic to Vijayan and the other Marxists. The Kerala Government’s decision to accept the PM-SREE project was the last straw in the ties between the CPI(M) and the CPI.

The Kerala Government was made to annul the MoU signed with the Ministry of human resources development as per the diktat of the CPI.

The CPI had been a trusted ally of the Congress from 1969 to 1980. The party’s Achutha Menon was the chief minister of Kerala during the internal emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, and continued the ties up to 1980.

The party came out of the Congress fold in 1980 as part of the formation of the Left Democratic Front.

The CPI’s top leaders are of the view that the party is part of the INDI Alliance, and it is only in Kerala that the CPI and the Congress were in opposite camps. Many political observers in the State like Sunnukutty Abraham, are of the view that it was the ideal time for the CPI to join the Congress led front because of the discrimination it faced in the hands of the CPI(M).
