Darrang (Assam), 08 September (HS): A tragic incident occurred in Sonapati area of Budhinagar, Sipajhar in Darrang district, where a father and his 5-year-old son drowned in a pond near their house.

Police said on Monday that the victims were identified as Dheeraj Saharia (33) and his son, Crystal Saharia. The mishap took place when the duo had gone for a bath in the pond. The child accidentally slipped into deep water and began drowning. In an attempt to save him, the father also drowned.

Local residents launched a rescue operation and pulled both out of the water. While the child was declared dead on the spot, the father was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police reached the site soon after the incident, took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem. An FIR has been registered and further investigation is underway.
