Guwahati, 08 September (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the resting place of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika at Jalukbari will henceforth be known as ‘Samannay Tirtha’.
Making the announcement during a special event, the Chief Minister said the new name was chosen to reflect Dr. Hazarika’s lifelong message of harmony, integration and cultural unity. He highlighted that the legendary singer, lyricist, and filmmaker devoted his art and philosophy to bridging communities, languages and traditions.
Dr. Sarma further noted that Bhupen Hazarika’s contribution to Assam and India transcended music and cinema, becoming a unifying force for society. By renaming the memorial site as ‘Samannay Tirtha’, the government aims to create a symbol of cultural integration where future generations can draw inspiration from his legacy.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting Dr. Hazarika’s works globally. He mentioned that a series of cultural and academic initiatives will soon be launched as part of the centenary celebrations of the music maestro.
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, fondly remembered as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’, passed away in 2011. His music and lyrics continue to resonate across Assam, the Northeast and beyond, carrying a timeless message of love, humanity and harmony.
