Washington DC, 7 September (H.S.): US President Donald Trump will make his first appearance at the US Open since 2015 on Sunday, watching the men’s final between world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz from Rolex’s suite in Arthur Ashe Stadium, according to a source familiar with the arrangements.
While Trump was a frequent presence at the tournament before entering politics, a sitting U.S. president’s attendance is unusually rare. The last time was in 2000, when Bill Clinton attended the final. Barack and Michelle Obama had earlier made an appearance at the 2023 opening night.
The U.S. Tennis Association confirmed that any negative reaction to Trump’s presence would not be shown on ABC’s broadcast, citing its longstanding policy of keeping off-court disruptions off air.
Trump’s acceptance of Rolex’s invitation comes only weeks after his administration imposed a steep 39 percent tariff on Swiss imports — significantly higher than those on EU and British goods. The move has raised questions about Switzerland’s competitiveness against its European neighbors, making the president’s association with the Swiss brand particularly notable.
The US Open adds to Trump’s string of high-profile sporting appearances this year, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, UFC fights, the NCAA wrestling championships, and the FIFA Club World Cup final.
The Trump Organization previously maintained its own suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium before suspending it in 2017, during Trump’s first year in office.
