West Singhbhum, Sept 7 (H.S.) : In an early morning encounter on Sunday, security forces gunned down a Naxalite carrying a ₹10 lakh bounty in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum (Chaibasa) district. The operation took place at Burjuwa Hills near Relaparl village under Goilkera police station limits.
Police had received intelligence inputs about Maoist movement in the area, following which a joint team launched a search operation. As soon as the forces advanced, the Naxalites opened fire, prompting retaliation.
The encounter, which lasted for several hours, led to the killing of CPI (Maoist) zonal commander Amit Hansda alias Upton. His body and weapons were recovered from the spot. Meanwhile, other Naxalites managed to escape using the forest cover.
SP Rakesh Ranjan confirmed the killing of the ultra and said that additional forces have been deployed. A massive search operation is underway in the jungles to track down the fleeing Maoists.
