State government's Onam week celebration

Kolkata, 5 September (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her heartfelt greetings to people on the occasion of Onam. In her message, she wished happiness and prosperity for all, saying, “Warm greetings on the joyous occasion of Onam. May this festive season bring you abundant happiness and prosperity.”

Onam is one of the most prominent festivals of South India, especially Kerala. The festival is celebrated in memory of King Mahabali, who, according to tradition, visits his people on this day. It also marks the harvest season and is considered a symbol of prosperity and well-being.

The grand festival of Onam lasts for ten days. Homes are decorated with floral designs called Pookalam. Traditional dance forms, boat races, and the elaborate feast known as Onam Sadya are integral to the celebrations. People wear new clothes and enjoy traditional delicacies as part of the festivities.
