Melbourne, Sept 5 (HS): Australia named their squad for the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup on Thursday, with left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux making a much-anticipated return after a long injury layoff. The 26-year-old, who underwent knee surgery earlier this year, has been out of international action for several months. While she may miss the preparatory ODI series against India, team management is confident she will be fully fit in time for the World Cup, beginning September 30.

The squad also receives a boost with the comebacks of Darcie Brown (quad injury) and leg-spinner Georgia Wareham (groin injury). Captain Alyssa Healy, who recently returned to action for Australia ‘A’ after her own injury struggles, was also named and is expected to be match-ready.

Team physio Kate Beerworth said: “Sophie Molineux is progressing well in her recovery and we’re optimistic she’ll be fit for the World Cup. Alyssa Healy and Georgia Wareham have also resumed full training, which is a big plus for us.”

The squad features several first-time picks for a 50-over World Cup: Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham (in her first ODI World Cup despite prior T20 appearances), and Kim Garth. Grace Harris has also been given her maiden ODI World Cup opportunity.

With Molineux, Wareham, Ashleigh Gardner, and Alana King, Australia’s spin unit looks particularly formidable — a key asset for subcontinental conditions in India and Sri Lanka. Batter Georgia Voll was rewarded for her prolific domestic performances.

For the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, Australia have also named Charli Knott (all-rounder) and Nicole Faltum (wicketkeeper-batter). However, both will return before the World Cup.

National selector Shawn Flegler said: “We have chosen a balanced squad with all conditions in mind. Spin will be crucial in India and Sri Lanka. Sophie Molineux’s progress is very encouraging and we’re confident she’ll be ready for the tournament.”

Australia, the defending champions after lifting their record sixth title in New Zealand in 2022, will begin their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 1 in Indore, India.
