Washington, 3 September (H.S.): U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday reiterated that while America enjoys cordial ties with India, trade relations have long remained “one-sided” due to what he called New Delhi’s “tremendous tariffs.”

Speaking at the White House, Trump dismissed the idea of easing tariffs on India and said he would even approach the U.S. Supreme Court for an “expedited ruling” in a tariff appeal. “No, we get along with India very well,” he clarified, “but for years the relationship was one-sided. India was charging us some of the highest tariffs in the world.”

According to Trump, U.S. businesses faced major hurdles while Indian goods freely entered the American market. “They were pouring products into our country, while we couldn’t send in anything without paying 100% tariffs,” he said.

Citing a specific example, Trump pointed to Harley Davidson’s struggles to sell motorcycles in India because of a 200% tariff. “So what happened? Harley Davidson had to move production to India to avoid tariffs. That’s not fair to American workers,” he remarked.

While Trump emphasized his administration’s push for a “level playing field,” trade experts note that Indo-U.S. ties are increasingly shaped by strategic trust, defense cooperation, and technology exchange—beyond tariff disputes.
