New Delhi, September 3 (HS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing on the bail plea of lawyer Surendra Gadling, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon case. A bench headed by Justice J.K. Maheshwari directed that the matter be taken up on September 17.
During the proceedings, Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju requested more time, following which the bench fixed the next date of hearing.
Gadling faces charges under various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He is accused of conspiring with co-accused individuals to aid Maoist groups, allegedly encouraging them to oppose mining operations at Surjagarh and mobilize local communities in the protest.
The case stems from the violence that broke out during the bicentenary celebrations of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon on January 1, 2018. The clashes led to the death of one person and injuries to several others. Police registered 58 cases against 162 individuals in connection with the violence.
