New Delhi, September 3 (HS) : After two consecutive sessions of weakness, the Indian stock market staged a strong comeback on Wednesday, closing higher as robust buying emerged in the second half of the trading session.

The day began on a positive note, but early trade was marked by high volatility, with buyers and sellers battling for dominance. However, sustained buying across key sectors in the latter half helped both Sensex and Nifty end with notable gains. At close, the Sensex rose 0.51% to 80,567.71 points, while the Nifty added 0.55%, settling at 24,715.05 points.

Sectoral & Broader Market Performance

Strong demand was seen in metals, pharmaceuticals, PSU banks, and automobiles. Indices for FMCG, realty, infrastructure, capital goods, consumer durables, oil & gas, and energy also closed in the green. On the other hand, IT, technology, and media stocks witnessed selling pressure.

The broader market mirrored the positive trend, with the BSE Midcap Index up 0.63% and the Smallcap Index rallying 0.90%.

Investor Wealth Surges

The market rally added nearly ₹2.97 lakh crore to investor wealth. The BSE market capitalization climbed to ₹452.87 lakh crore (provisional), compared to ₹449.90 lakh crore in the previous session.

On the BSE, 4,270 shares were actively traded; 2,640 advanced, 1,463 declined, while 167 remained unchanged. At the NSE, 2,778 shares saw action, with 1,884 ending in green and 894 in red. Out of the 30 Sensex constituents, 22 closed higher and 8 lower, while in the Nifty basket, 35 stocks advanced and 15 declined.

Key Highlights of the Session

Sensex opened at 80,296, slipped to an intraday low of 80,004, before rallying to a high of 80,671, and finally settled at 80,568, up 410 points.

Nifty opened at 24,616, touched an intraday low of 24,533, surged to 24,737, and closed at 24,715, up 135 points.

Gainers: Tata Steel (+5.97%), Hindalco (+3.05%), JSW Steel (+2.70%), Coal India (+2.55%), IndusInd Bank (+2.25%).

Losers: Infosys (-1.31%), HDFC Life (-0.80%), NTPC (-0.61%), Wipro (-0.55%), Nestlé India (-0.51%).
