Kolkata, 3 September (H.S.): The monsoon is expected to remain active in West Bengal throughout September, bringing intermittent spells of rain across the state. According to the Meteorological Department, the seasonal rainfall pattern may continue until the first or second week of October. However, it is still uncertain whether Durga Puja celebrations will see rainfall this year.

Officials said a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Bay of Bengal developed into a low-pressure system on Tuesday. By Wednesday evening, it is likely to intensify into a deep depression, moving west and northwest to make landfall through the Odisha coast.

In South Bengal, heavy rain is expected on Wednesday in coastal and western districts including East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, and Jhargram. On Thursday and Friday, most districts in South Bengal may witness thunderstorms and rain accompanied by strong winds. Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly districts could experience wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph during this period.

In North Bengal, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is also forecast for Wednesday. Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri may see wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease from Thursday, with relatively calmer weather on Friday and Saturday. However, fresh showers are likely to begin again on Sunday, with heavy rain predicted in these districts on Sunday and Monday.

Kolkata is expected to remain generally cloudy on Wednesday morning, with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 31°C and the minimum around 26°C. From Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, the city recorded 26.5 mm of rainfall. Humidity levels have been ranging between 79 and 97 percent, making the weather feel humid and uncomfortable.
