West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday paid homage to legendary actor Uttam Kumar on his birth anniversary, describing him as the “evergreen matinee idol” and a guiding star of Bengali cinema.

In a message shared on social media, Banerjee wrote, “On the birth anniversary of the evergreen matinee idol, the pole star of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar, I offer my humble tribute.”

Fondly remembered as Mahanayak (the great hero), Uttam Kumar reigned over the hearts of cinema lovers for decades with his unmatched acting prowess and charismatic personality. His contribution was not confined to Bengali cinema alone; he also earned acclaim in Hindi films.

Even today, his films continue to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences, making him one of the most enduring icons of Indian cinema.
