Banda,
27 Sept (HS): On Saturday, tensions
rose on the Banda court site when a prisoner unexpectedly became unwell during
his court appearance, prompting officers to whisk him to the district
hospital. The prisoner, who was facing
rape accusations, was eventually sent to a higher medical center for further
treatment.
According to authorities, the
undertrial prisoner at Mahoba Prison said he took powdered glass mixed with
water before being transported to court.
He said that he took the drastic measure owing to ongoing harassment
within the jail and the authorities' unwillingness to intervene despite
repeated complaints.
According to
witnesses, the prisoner's health deteriorated while being shown in Atarra
court. Police officers transported him
straight to the local hospital, where physicians recommended him to the medical
college for further care.
Praveen Yadav, Deputy Superintendent of Police
(DSP), verified the occurrence. An accused was transported to Atarra court for
a hearing when his condition abruptly deteriorated. He said that he ingested glass at Mahoba
prison owing to several issues. He has
now been admitted to the medical college for further treatment. The DSP contacted Mahoba police and the jail
superintendent, and further legal action will be taken, he added.
According
to preliminary evidence, the prisoner spoke of being tormented and harassed by
his fellow detainees at the barracks.
Despite several complaints to the jailor and supervisor, no action was
taken, he claimed. Frustrated, he drank
glass before heading for court. Authorities have initiated an investigation,
with both police and jail administrations looking into the incident.
