New Delhi, September 2 (H.S.): India is set to receive prestigious honor in the badminton world once again as New Delhi has been announced as the host city for the 2026 BWF World Badminton Championships. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the ongoing World Championships in Paris.
Adding to the excitement, Indian star doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured a bronze medal, marking their second medal achievement at the World Championships.
Sanjay Mishra, Secretary-General of the Badminton Association of India, expressed gratitude to BWF for entrusting India with the hosting rights. He assured that India would match the excellence and grandeur displayed by Paris and eagerly looks forward to welcoming the entire badminton family to Delhi.
India’s Performance at the World Championships
-India has won a total of 15 medals in the history of the World Badminton Championships.
-Iconic shuttler PV Sindhu alone has contributed five medals—1 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze.
Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal has earned 2 bronze medals.
-Kidambi Srikanth claimed silver in 2021, while Sai Praneeth, Lakshya Sen, and HS Prannoy have brought home bronze medals in recent years.
-India’s maiden World Championship medal was a bronze won by Prakash Padukone in Copenhagen in 1983.
-In the women’s doubles category, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched a bronze medal in 2011, adding to India’s rich badminton legacy .
