In a Post on X ,PM wrote,This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, is widely regarded as a watershed moment. Emphasising harmony and universal brotherhood, he passionately spoke about the ideals of Indian culture on the world stage. It is truly among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history.

Swami Vivekananda's iconic speech took place at the inaugural session of the World's Parliament of Religions held at the Art Institute of Chicago—then newly established as part of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Addressing an audience of diverse religious delegates and scholars from across the world, Vivekananda began with the famous salutation, Sisters and Brothers of America, immediately captivating listeners with his message of inclusiveness and spiritual unity. He praised his Hindu faith for advocating tolerance and universal acceptance, underscoring how different religions, though varied in form, ultimately converged on the same fundamental truths.

Vivekananda notably spoke about India's tradition of sheltering persecuted communities like Jews and Zoroastrians, emphasizing India's cultural ethos of acceptance and pluralism. His speech condemned sectarianism, bigotry, and fanaticism—common societal ills that undermine peace. He invoked the metaphor of different rivers merging into the sea to illustrate the unity of all religious paths leading to the divine. Through his words, Vivekananda sought to inspire mutual respect among religions and urged for global harmony and peace, ideals that remain remarkably relevant today.

PM Modi reflected on the speech's lasting inspiration, stating that Vivekananda introduced India's age-old message of unity, peace, and brotherhood to the world stage. The Prime Minister noted that these words continue to motivate generations, reminding humanity of the enduring power of togetherness and harmony in an increasingly divided world. By revisiting Vivekananda's message, Modi called for a renewed commitment to religious tolerance and universal brotherhood as guiding principles for contemporary society.

This commemorative moment also coincides with National Youth Day in India, observed annually on January 12 to honor Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary and his immense contribution to Indian spirituality and global interfaith dialogue. Vivekananda’s address in Chicago remains one of the most celebrated moments in India’s cultural and spiritual history, symbolizing a pivotal introduction of Indian philosophy to the wider world and a timeless call for peace and unity among all people.

PM Modi’s tribute reiterates the significance of this historic speech delivered over 130 years ago, underscoring its status as a beacon of universal harmony, spirituality, and Indian civilizational heritage that continues to inspire the global community.
