Kathmandu,September 11(HS): Nepal remains under strict curfew and nationwide restrictions today on Thursday following violent protests by young demonstrators known as Gen Zs, which have left at least 25 people dead and hundreds injured. The unrest erupted after a brief government social media ban triggered massive protests, escalating into attacks on government buildings and widespread chaos.
In response, the Nepali Army imposed strict orders for citizens to stay indoors, deploying forces to restore order as the government collapses under pressure. More than 13,000 prisoners were freed during the disturbances across all 77 districts, signaling the severity of the chaos.
On Wednesday, key representatives of the protesters met with Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel to discuss forming an interim government. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerged as a favored candidate for transitional leadership, also endorsed by Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, a young rapper-turned-engineer popular among the youth. Shah urged patience, emphasizing that the interim government’s role will be to organize new elections.
The political crisis has swept aside established leaders including ex-Prime Ministers KP Sharma Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba, whose whereabouts remain unknown amid the turmoil. Analysts warn the restoration of monarchy remains highly unlikely despite some public nostalgia, as it risks a return to autocratic rule.
Meanwhile, the disputed parliament still legally stands, with political experts urging dialogue to chart Nepal’s path forward after a decade of federal republic status and recent elections in 2022. The nation faces a historic crossroads as youth-led resistance reshapes its political landscape.
