Washington, September 10(HS):
US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed ongoing trade negotiations with India aimed at resolving existing trade barriers between the two nations, signaling a commitment to maintain strong bilateral relations despite recent tariff tensions. In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed optimism about upcoming discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stressing confidence in reaching mutually beneficial agreements.
Sharing a post on Truth Social, Trump on Tuesday wrote, I am pleased to announce that India, and the United States of America, are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks.I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries! he added
The announcement follows the US decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, including additional penalties on Indian purchases of Russian oil, which had raised concerns about the stability of Indo-US economic ties. Trump concurrently described the India-US relationship as “very special,” emphasizing personal friendship with Modi while diplomatically expressing dissatisfaction with some of India's recent policy choices.
In response, Prime Minister Modi warmly reciprocated Trump’s sentiments through social media, highlighting the “forward-looking” and “Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership” between the two countries. Both leaders appear committed to fostering continued cooperation despite trade disagreements, underscoring the importance of the bilateral relationship amid a complex geopolitical landscape.
Trump’s statements come amid broader global trade disputes and diplomatic efforts, reflecting the delicate balance between economic measures and maintaining longstanding strategic partnerships.
