Washington, Aug 9 (HS): President Donald Trump has abruptly dismissed Billy Long from his position as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), less than two months after appointing him. The announcement came on Friday, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent named as acting IRS chief until a permanent replacement is found.

According to The New York Times, Long, a former Republican congressman, had little experience in tax administration apart from promoting a controversial tax credit. His short tenure was marked by repeated clashes with Treasury Secretary Bessent, and sources said he made several significant missteps.

CNN reported that even before his removal, Trump had appointed Bessent as acting commissioner and that the administration is now searching for an experienced candidate for the role. Sources also indicated that Long might be nominated as U.S. Ambassador to Iceland — a move he welcomed, saying he was excited to take on the diplomatic post.

Long’s brief stint makes him one of the shortest-serving IRS commissioners in U.S. history. His removal adds to the leadership turbulence at the IRS under Trump, coming at a time when the administration is pushing major tax policy reforms and seeking to increase efficiency within the agency.
