Delhi, 9 August (H.S.): U.S. President Donald Trump announced he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska for high-stakes talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting will be the first between sitting U.S. and Russian leaders since 2021 and the first face-to-face between Trump and Putin since 2019.

The war, sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. Peace efforts have so far stalled, with three rounds of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv producing no breakthrough. Trump has hinted that any eventual deal could involve territorial swaps between Ukraine and Russia, though details remain unclear.

Ahead of the summit, Putin held consultations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both of whom voiced support for a political settlement. The Kremlin said Xi welcomed closer U.S.-Russia contacts, while India criticized new U.S. tariffs linked to its oil imports from Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists Ukraine must be directly involved in talks, criticizing any settlement that excludes Kyiv. On the ground, Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine, prompting new evacuations from front-line villages in Donetsk region.

The Alaska talks are expected to test whether renewed U.S.-Russia dialogue can bring the nearly three-year war any closer to an end.
