Washington, Aug 9 (HS): U.S. President Donald J. Trump has ordered the Pentagon to prepare plans for possible military action against drug cartels designated as foreign terrorist organizations, including Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel, and MS-13.

The move follows an executive order earlier this year labeling several cartels as global terrorist groups. While officials say no military deployment is expected soon, the legality of such operations remains in question.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said Trump’s top priority is protecting the homeland. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum firmly rejected any U.S. military presence in Mexico, stressing cooperation without invasion.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported the decision, saying it grants new tools to combat cartels. However, former State Department legal adviser Brian Finucane warned that the terrorist designation does not automatically authorize the use of force, making the matter legally complex.
