Kolkata, 7 August (H.S.):
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has levelled serious allegations against a local Trinamool Congress leader from Cooch Behar, accusing him of openly threatening a BJP Yuva Morcha district official. Adhikari claimed the incident is a clear reflection of what he termed the culture of violence and intimidation promoted by the ruling party.
In a social media post shared on Thursday from his official handle, Adhikari alleged that Dharnikanta Barman, a prominent TMC leader from the Ghoksadanga area of Cooch Behar, is named as the 11th accused in a complaint related to a previous attack on him. According to Adhikari, Barman is now issuing direct threats to Prashant Barman, the General Secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha in Cooch Behar district.
“This incident lays bare the operational mindset of Trinamool Congress—where it’s not the rule of law, but the law of the rulers that prevails,” Adhikari wrote in his post. “When a ruling party leader finds himself entangled in legal proceedings, his first instinct is to manipulate the law through intimidation.”
Calling the situation symptomatic of a larger political trend, Adhikari added, “This is not an isolated case—it is part of a systemic effort in Bengal to silence political opposition through fear and coercion.” He urged the authorities to take immediate cognizance of the incident and demanded adequate protection for the BJP youth leader.
As of now, the Trinamool Congress has not issued any official response to the allegations. The controversy comes amid ongoing political tensions in the state, where both parties have repeatedly accused each other of using violence as a political tool.
