Brasília, 6 August (H.S.): Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declined US President Donald Trump's offer to discuss tariffs on Tuesday, asserting that Brazil will utilize all available resources, including the World Trade Organisation (WTO), to protect its interests. The bilateral relationship has soured following the US imposing a 50% tariff on Brazil, linked to what Trump termed a witch hunt against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who faces charges after his election defeat in 2022. Lula labeled the tariff imposition as the most regrettable moment in the US-Brazil relations and underscored Brazil's effort to bolster trade with other nations, including BRICS members.

Lula indicated that by 2025, Brazil would seek to take comprehensive measures to uphold its economic interests, having already begun actions to foster foreign trade prior to the US administration change. He expressed reluctance to communicate directly with Trump, arguing that the US president is not inclined to converse. Instead, Lula mentioned his willingness to engage with leaders like Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Modi, but noted he would refrain from contacting Putin due to travel limitations.

Despite the tensions, Lula is planning to invite Trump to COP30, the upcoming UN climate change conference in November. He emphasized his intention to reach out to Trump for this event to gauge his views on climate issues, ensuring that any lack of attendance would be at Trump’s discretion rather than a reflection of a lack of courtesy. Lula maintained that Brazil is open to tariff negotiations with the US but insists on discussions that uphold equal terms and mutual respect, reiterating his commitment to national sovereignty and equitable trade practices.
