Yemen boat tragedy: 12 passengers rescued, 142 dead

Sana (Yemen), August 5(HS): A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Yemen on Sunday, where a boat carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants capsized, resulting in only 12 survivors. Abdusattor Esoev, head of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Yemen reported that the remaining 142 migrants are presumed dead, with over 68 bodies recovered, mainly along the Khawfah coast.

The Abyan province's security directorate has initiated a large-scale search and rescue operation. Thousands of migrants, primarily Ethiopians, attempt the perilous journey from the Horn of Africa to Yemen each year, seeking work in Gulf countries. This route remains extremely dangerous.

Earlier this year, in March, 186 Africans went missing due to similar incidents, and already in 2024, 550 migrants have lost their lives amid Yemen's ongoing civil war, exacerbating security risks for those migrating.
