Washington , 5 August (H.S.): The US Justice Department is set to begin a grand jury investigation into allegations that senior officials from Barack Obama’s administration distorted intelligence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. The investigation follows claims by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard about the weaponisation of the US intelligence community.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi has instructed federal prosecutors to proceed with legal actions, prompting potential grand jury indictments. These allegations have surfaced from claims made by President Donald Trump, who has accused Obama of treason for allegedly undermining his campaign. Gabbard asserts that recently declassified documents reveal a conspiracy against Trump, though Democrats label these accusations as unfounded.
A spokesperson for Obama has dismissed the claims as absurd. A 2017 intelligence assessment indicated that Russia attempted to influence the election, but found no evidence that this interference altered vote outcomes, while Russia has denied any involvement.
