Chennai, 31 August (H.S.) : The BJP high command has stepped up efforts to ensure unity within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu, particularly between the AIADMK and the BJP. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in a recent visit to Chennai, conveyed a clear message to both parties: put aside internal squabbles and work together to oust the DMK regime in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Sitharaman's directive marks a shift from gentle persuasion to a more assertive approach, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts within the NDA. She highlighted that Tamil Nadu requires a change in governance and that people are seeking relief from various issues affecting families. The message was delivered in the presence of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP leader K Annamalai, whose statements had previously caused friction.
The AIADMK and BJP leaders have been asked to work together, focusing on their shared goal of regime change in 2026. Annamalai has been told to tone down his criticism of the AIADMK and work in tandem with Palaniswami. The BJP high command believes that the party can grow in Tamil Nadu only with the AIADMK's help. A senior BJP leader noted that the priority now is smooth vote transfer and organizational cohesion.
The development comes as the NDA partners prepare for the 2026 Assembly elections, with the BJP and AIADMK aiming to present a united front against the ruling DMK. The alliance's success will depend on the ability of its constituent parties to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal.
