Guwahati, 29 August (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the NDA Panchayat Representatives’ conclave at Khanapara, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to safeguard “jati, mati, bheti” (community, land and identity) and accelerate development in the state ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
Highlighting the NDA’s massive victory in the recently held Panchayat polls, Sarma said the alliance secured 301 out of 397 Zila Parishad seats, 1,445 out of 2,088 Anchalik Panchayat seats, and 21,920 ward member seats, calling it the “biggest win in Assam’s political history.” He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the resounding mandate.
The CM lauded Union Home Minister Amit Shah for bringing “unimaginable peace” to Assam through accords with Bodo, Karbi, Dimasa, Adivasi groups and hinted at progress with ULFA. He assured Panchayat representatives that from January 1, the state government would cover full medical expenses for them and their families.
Sarma emphasized his government’s developmental vision—UNESCO recognition for Charaideo Maidam, classical status for Assamese and Bengali languages, promotion of cultural icons like Srimanta Sankardeva’s Vrindavani Vastra, mega projects like the under-river Brahmaputra tunnel at Numaligarh, elevated corridors over Kaziranga, and welfare schemes such as Orunodoi and Atmanirbhar Assam.
Taking aim at Rahul Gandhi and Jamiat Ulema leader Arshad Madani, Sarma warned that “no threat will weaken Assamese identity,” vowing to fight until the last drop of blood if necessary. He reiterated that land rights would go to indigenous people only, declaring, “We will build an Assam where the new generation feels safe, hears songs of development instead of gunfire and thrives without leaving the state for jobs.”
The Chief Minister ended his speech with a self-written poem outlining his vision and resolve for Assam’s future.
