- Citizen’s Society Acting as Congress’ Escort Service: BJP
Guwahati, 26 August (HS): BJP Assam Pradesh on Tuesday came down heavily on the “Citizen’s Society,” accusing it of functioning as an “escort service” for the Congress party and facilitating the entry of “Urban Naxals” into Assam to create unrest.
Addressing a press conference at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sharma alleged that the forum led by Dr. Hiren Gohain, MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Dr. Apurba Kumar Baruah and Paresh Malakar has been reduced to serving Congress’ political interests. “Whenever Congress is cornered politically or socially, this so-called Citizen’s Society jumps to its rescue. People of Assam have now seen through their real face—they operate on Congress’ payroll, escorting imported agents under the garb of intellectuals,” Sharma charged.
According to him, the sole agenda of the Society is to organize seminars and press meets, giving platforms to Congress-backed “leftist intellectuals” known for their “divisive and anti-national rhetoric.” Sharma named Syeda Hameed, Harsh Mander, Prashant Bhushan, Wajahat Habibullah, Jawhar Sircar and Rana Ayyub as examples, alleging that they were beneficiaries of posts, awards and privileges during the UPA regime.
He further claimed that several NGOs linked to these figures had siphoned off crores of rupees during the UPA era. “After the Modi government came to power, foreign funding was stopped and many such NGOs lost their registrations. Deprived of luxury, they are now bitter against Prime Minister Modi,” Sharma said.
Alleging a “Congress–Urban Naxal nexus,” Sharma said that in Assam, the Citizen’s Society was being used to disrupt peace and harmony by importing controversial figures and giving them space to spread “anti-Assam rhetoric.”
“The BJP Assam Pradesh strongly condemns these activities aimed at sabotaging Assam’s peace and development,” Sharma asserted.
BJP spokesperson Dr. Zafreen Mehjabin was also present during the press briefing.
