Guwahati (Assam), 26 August (HS): Police have arrested a notorious thief along with two habitual receivers of stolen goods, recovering gold, silver and other stolen items in a major operation in Guwahati.
The arrests were made following a complaint of burglary involving gold ornaments and cash near Income Tax Colony, Mahila Samity Compound, Beltola Borgaon. Acting on the complaint, Basistha police launched a search operation and apprehended the prime accused, Akash Sarkar (19), a resident of Lakhimi Nagar, Manikanshan Path, Beltola under Hatigaon PS. During the raid, police seized one black T-shirt, one black track pant and a pair of Crocs sandals from his residence.
Upon interrogation, Sarkar revealed that he had sold the stolen items to a jewellery shop in Lokhara. Acting on this information, police raided New Nataraj Jewellery, Lokhara under Gorchuk PS and arrested two receivers of stolen property — Sanjay Basak (40) of Barpeta and Ratan Haloi (26) of Nalbari.
The items recovered and seized from the jewellery shop include 19.27 grams of suspected gold (1 chain, 1 locket, 3 earrings), 6 pieces of animal teeth, 663.32 grams suspected silver, Small quantity of suspected gold dust, 35 silver rings, One Realme mobile phone, One Oppo mobile phone, One book in the name of Nataraj Jewellers, Two gas cutters with pipes and a regulator.
Police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.
