New Delhi, August 26 (HS):

On the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her greetings to citizens in India and abroad, calling upon people to celebrate the festival with spiritual fervor while being mindful of the environment.

In her message, the President described Lord Ganesha as “the divine source of wisdom and well-being” and said the festival symbolizes new beginnings, positivity, and the removal of obstacles. She emphasized that the occasion inspires individuals to set fresh goals with renewed determination.

“The time-honored tradition of worshipping Lord Ganesha reflects the cultural richness and unity of our nation. Let us celebrate this festival while conserving our environment and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous India,” the President appealed.

Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, one of India’s most widely celebrated Hindu festivals, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the deity revered as the remover of obstacles and patron of wisdom and prosperity. The celebration typically lasts 10 days, beginning with the ceremonial installation of clay idols of the deity in homes and public pandals, followed by devotional songs, bhajans, cultural events, and community prayers.

The festival culminates with ‘Ganesh Visarjan,’ when idols are immersed in water bodies with chants of farewell, symbolizing detachment and the cycle of creation and dissolution in life.

Focus on Eco-Friendly Practices

In recent years, there has been a national push towards eco-friendly celebrations, using clay idols, natural colors, and sustainable decorations to minimize environmental damage caused by water pollution. Various civic bodies and NGOs are actively encouraging safe immersions in artificial ponds and eco-sensitive initiatives.

Ganesh Chaturthi also fosters a strong sense of community bonding, drawing participation across faiths and regions. Major celebrations take place in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and parts of North India, as well as among the Indian diaspora worldwide.

As festivities begin on Wednesday, millions across the country are gearing up to welcome Lord Ganesha with prayers and joy, blending spiritual devotion with renewed commitment to sustainable practices — in line with the President’s appeal.
