New Delhi, Aug 26 (HS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports on the death of three migrant labourers in a building collapse in Delhi’s Daryaganj area and has sought a detailed report from authorities within two weeks.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 20, involved the partial collapse of an under-construction four-storey building where around 15 workers were present. While several narrowly escaped, three labourers—all migrants from Bihar—lost their lives.
Taking note of the reported lapses, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District, asking them to explain the circumstances that led to the mishap and the measures taken thereafter.
“The Commission views the matter with concern, as the reported negligence raises serious issues of human rights violation,” it said.
Following the incident, police have reportedly registered a case against the building owner and the contractor. The NHRC has underscored the need for accountability and strict compliance with safety regulations to prevent recurrence of such tragedies.
