Krishnanagar, 25 August (H.S.): A shocking incident of broad daylight murder has rocked Krishnanagar in Nadia district, where a 19-year-old student, identified as Isha Mallick, was allegedly shot dead at point-blank range by an assailant on Monday afternoon.
According to police sources, the attack took place around 2:30 p.m. at Mallick’s residence in the Manikpara area, when no other family members were at home. Preliminary investigation suggests that a man, identified as Debraj Singh, a resident of Kanchrapara, entered the house and fired at the student before fleeing the spot.
Mallick, who had been staying in Kanchrapara for her studies, had recently returned home after completing her education. Investigators believe the murder could be linked to strained personal relations between the victim and the accused.
Speaking on the incident, Shilpi Pal, DSP of Krishnanagar Police District, said: “It appears the accused and the victim knew each other. We are investigating along that line. However, the exact motive is yet to be confirmed.” Police are also probing whether Singh received any assistance in executing the crime.
The incident has drawn parallels to the 2022 Berhampore murder of student Sutapa Choudhury, who was brutally killed by an acquaintance while returning to her hostel. In that case, the accused was sentenced to death in 2023.
Police sources said initial findings point towards Mallick’s attempt to sever ties with Singh, which he allegedly refused to accept. A manhunt has been launched to trace Singh, who remains absconding.
