Imphal, 25 August (HS): A series of coordinated operations over the last 24 hours led Manipur Police and security forces to arrest a key insurgent cadre, seize illegal arms, and intercept contraband consignments across three districts.

In Kakching district, police apprehended Thongam Dilip Meitei, identified as a member of the proscribed outfit Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), from Tangjeng Khunou. Officials said Meitei, a resident of Napat Mayai Leikai, had been running an extortion racket targeting educational institutions and brick kiln owners in Kakching and Thoubal districts. Two mobile phones recovered from him are likely to shed light on the financial network of the banned organisation.

Meanwhile, a major breakthrough came into the Imphal East when security forces discovered a weapons dump in the Huikap foothills. The cache comprised a 4-kg IED, a 9mm pistol, two single-barrel rifles, grenades, ammunition and a wireless set—pointing towards a larger coordinated plan of insurgent groups.

In a separate operation in Bishnupur district, two men—Md. Aziz Khan (23) and Md. Suraj Khan (20)—were intercepted at Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar. Security personnel seized 30 bags of betel nuts weighing over 1,300 kg from their Tata Yodha vehicle, suspected to be part of a smuggling racket.

Authorities termed the operations a significant step in dismantling extortion networks and curbing illegal trade in the state.
