New Delhi, Aug 25 (HS): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said that the foundation of Indian democracy rests on sacrifice and struggle, and the foremost duty of every elected representative should be to put national interest above all else.
Addressing the valedictory session of the All India Speakers’ Conference at the Delhi Assembly, the Chief Minister underscored that differences of opinion are the strength of democracy, but when it comes to decisions concerning citizens and the nation, political parties must stand united.
Welcoming Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Ministers Manohar Lal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, she described the conference as an opportunity for Speakers and Deputy Speakers from across states to reaffirm their sense of duty and commitment. She also called the participation of women Speakers and Deputy Speakers particularly inspiring.
Marking 100 years of India’s first Central Legislative Assembly, Gupta recalled how the presiding of the Assembly by Indians marked the true beginning of the nation’s democratic journey. Paying tribute to freedom fighters, she stressed that safeguarding the dignity of independence remains the greatest responsibility of today’s leaders.
Emphasising the guiding principle of “Nation First, Party Second, Self Last,” she urged lawmakers to ensure debates and discussions in legislatures enhance the dignity of democracy and serve people’s interests. Citing the legacy of freedom fighter Vitthalbhai Patel, she said that legislators must live up to people’s expectations to raise their voices and take decisions in the spirit of national interest.
Looking ahead to 2047, marking 100 years of India’s independence, Gupta said this is the moment for renewed energy and commitment, with people’s aspirations defining the highest form of rashtra dharma (national duty).
