Guwahati, 25 August (HS): The anti-Assam remarks made during a citizens’ convention organized by Assam Nagarik Samaj, led by Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, intellectuals Hiren Gohain, Paresh Malakar, and Harekrishna Deka, have drawn widespread condemnation across the state.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP’s State Headquarters, Chief Spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay, along with Spokespersons Dr. Zafreen Mehjabin and Pranjal Kalita, accused Assam Nagarik Samaj of conspiring against the indigenous people while showing sympathy towards Bangladeshi infiltrators. They alleged that Congress-backed leftist intellectuals were working to disturb peace and rehabilitate foreigners in Assam.

Upadhyay named former UPA advisor Prashant Bhushan, ex-NHRC member Harsh Mander, former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed, and ex-Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar as individuals whose statements posed a threat to the existence of indigenous people. He further alleged that Syeda Hameed had openly opposed evictions of Bangladeshi infiltrators, encouraging illegal encroachment under Congress rule for decades.

He claimed that even after rehabilitation, some evicted persons were demanding voting rights in their old settlements, calling it a “dangerous conspiracy to capture indigenous lands and cripple Assamese society.”

The BJP spokesperson credited Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership for thwarting such conspiracies, accusing Congress and its allies of targeting him for this reason. He also criticized Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind leader Mahmood Madani, who opposed the NRC and sought Sarma’s removal, and pointed out that Assam Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia had endorsed Jamiat’s stand.

Upadhyay alleged that Ajit Kumar Bhuyan entered the Rajya Sabha with Congress and AIUDF support by “betraying Assamese self-respect,” while Hiren Gohain repeatedly opposed Assamese identity to appease political patrons. He recalled that Congress-backed leftist elements had also instigated unrest during the anti-CAA movement, even attempting to damage national institutions.

Concluding the press conference, Upadhyay urged CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to identify and imprison all such “outsiders and conspirators” working against Assam’s indigenous people.
