New Delhi, August 25(HS):
Commuters in the national capital will now have to shell out more for their daily metro rides, as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has revised passenger fares with effect from Monday.
According to DMRC officials, the fare slab has been increased marginally this time, ranging from ₹1 to ₹4 across different distances. On the Airport Express Line, the hike is slightly higher, going up to ₹5 depending on the stretch of travel.
The new fare adjustment means that the minimum metro fare now stands at ₹11, up from ₹10 earlier, while the maximum fare has been revised to ₹64, compared to ₹60 till Sunday.
Officials emphasized that the fare revision was structured carefully so as not to put an undue financial burden on passengers, while also ensuring the sustainability of operations amid rising costs.
This revision marks the first upward adjustment in metro fares in eight years, after the last revision was carried out in 2017, based on the recommendations of the Fourth Fare Fixation Committee.
For nearly three decades, the Delhi Metro has served as the backbone of public transport in the capital, carrying millions of passengers daily. While the fare hike may pinch regular commuters, authorities argue that the adjustment remains modest relative to inflation and operational costs.
