Bengal Govt Likely to Launch ‘Shramashree’ Portal This Week to Support Migrant Workers

Kolkata, 25 August (H.S.): The much-awaited ‘Shramashree’ scheme of the West Bengal government, aimed at rehabilitating and supporting migrant workers, is likely to be rolled out this week. According to a senior official of the state Labour Department, both the web portal and the mobile application for the scheme are nearly ready and will be made accessible to the public soon.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the initiative on August 18. Under ‘Shramashree’, Bengali migrant workers — particularly those allegedly facing harassment in BJP-ruled states — will be encouraged to return to West Bengal, where the government will assist them in rebuilding their livelihoods.

As part of the package, each returning worker will receive a one-time travel assistance of ₹5,000 and a monthly rehabilitation allowance of ₹5,000 for up to 12 months, until permanent employment is secured. The government has also released a helpline number: 18001030009.

Officials emphasized that ‘Shramashree’ is not limited to financial aid but is designed as a comprehensive social security mechanism, covering employment opportunities, healthcare, and food security for the returning workers. A detailed meeting on the scheme’s implementation was held at the state secretariat last weekend.

CM Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly raised concerns over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people and attacks on linguistic identity across the country. The state government believes this initiative will not only provide financial relief but also ensure social dignity and security for the workers.
