Rajgir, August 25 (HS): Defending champions Korea men’s hockey team landed in Bihar late Sunday night to spearhead their title defense at the Asia Cup 2025. Led by skipper Jongsuk Bae, the five-time champions will look to extend their dominance in the prestigious continental event, scheduled in Rajgir from August 29 to September 7.
Korea remains the most successful side in Asia Cup history, having clinched the crown a record five times. Their last triumph came in 2022 at Jakarta, where they edged past Malaysia 2-1 in the final. Currently ranked 13th in the FIH world rankings, Korea has been slotted in Pool B alongside Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei. The team will open its campaign against Chinese Taipei on August 29, followed by a crucial clash against Malaysia on August 30, and then round off the pool stages against Bangladesh on September 1.
On arrival, captain Jongsuk Bae expressed delight at the warm reception in Rajgir. “This is our first tournament in Rajgir, and the welcome we received here has been very special and heartwarming. The hospitality and enthusiasm of the people make this event even more memorable for us,” he said.
Speaking about the challenge of defending the crown, Bae remained cautious yet optimistic. “It’s never easy to defend a title as every team is strong and the matches will be tough. But we promise to give our best on the field with total commitment and spirit. Our focus is to translate training efforts into performances that deliver positive results,” he stated.
Highlighting the added incentive, the Korea skipper pointed out that this edition carries World Cup qualification stakes. “Yes, there is pressure, but we are not letting it burden us. Instead, it’s motivating us to work harder and stay more focused. Our ultimate goal is to throw everything into every match and return with the best possible outcome,” he added.
