Golaghat (Assam), 24 August (HS): A protest erupted on the highway at Uriamghat in Sarupathar, located along the Assam-Nagaland border, against the Assam government’s eviction drive to clear illegal encroachments from government land.

The demonstration was organized by the Sarupathar unit of the AATASU, which strongly opposed the eviction action. Protesters also demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. As part of the protest, they also staged a symbolic burning of an effigy of Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind.
