Chennai, 24 August (H.S.) : The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has received the green light to drill hydrocarbon test wells in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. The project involves drilling exploratory wells to assess the feasibility of extracting hydrocarbon reserves in the area.

The ONGC plans to drill test wells in 20 locations across Ramanathapuram district. The corporation has identified potential hydrocarbon reserves in the Cauvery delta region and aims to determine the commercial viability of extraction. The project is expected to provide valuable insights into the region's hydrocarbon potential.

However, environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential impact of hydrocarbon extraction on the region's ecosystem. They fear that the extraction process could contaminate groundwater sources and damage the agricultural ecosystem. The Cauvery delta region is known for its fertile soil and rich biodiversity, making it a sensitive area that requires protection.

The Tamil Nadu government will play a crucial role in ensuring that the project is executed in an environmentally sustainable manner. The government must balance the need for economic development with the need to protect the environment and the interests of local communities.

The ONGC will proceed with drilling test wells in the designated locations, following all necessary safety protocols and environmental regulations. The outcome of the project will determine the future of hydrocarbon extraction in the region and its potential impact on the environment and local communities.
