New Delhi, August 24 (HS): India’s “Test specialist” Cheteshwar Pujara has announced his retirement from all formats of Indian cricket. The 37-year-old veteran batter revealed his decision through an emotional social media post on Sunday, bringing curtains down on a distinguished career spanning over a decade.
Bidding adieu to the game, Pujara wrote that donning the Indian jersey, singing the national anthem, and striving to give his best every time he stepped onto the field was an experience beyond words. “With immense gratitude, I have decided to retire from all formats of Indian cricket. Thank you all for your love and support,” he expressed.
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, the Rajkot-born batter said he once dreamed of representing India without realizing the incredible opportunities, experiences, and pride the game would eventually bring. He thanked the BCCI, the Saurashtra Cricket Association, various franchises, county clubs, coaches, mentors, and teammates who played a role in his career, and also acknowledged behind-the-scenes staff who made the game possible.
Expressing gratitude to his sponsors and management team for years of trust and support, Pujara said the game had taken him around the world where he received immense love from fans everywhere—a memory he would always cherish.
In a moving personal note, the veteran thanked his parents, wife Puja, daughter Aditi, in-laws, and his entire family for their sacrifices and unwavering support. “This journey wouldn’t have been possible without them. Now, I want to dedicate more time to my family and prioritize the next chapter of my life,” he wrote.
A Glorious Test Career
Pujara scripted one of India’s most successful Test careers, featuring in 103 matches and amassing 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60. His tally includes 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, with a highest score of an unbeaten 206. While his ODI career was brief, comprising just 5 matches and 51 runs, his role in shaping India’s Test dominance—particularly overseas—is widely regarded as invaluable.
