Bhubaneswar, 24 August (H.S.): The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated steps to remove long-abandoned, unfit, and seized vehicles lying in its premises and at various police stations across the city. Mayor Sulochana Das said the move would serve a dual purpose of reclaiming valuable public land and generating additional revenue through the sale of scrap.

“Several broken hoardings and defunct BMC vehicles, already declared unfit by the RTO, will be disposed of as scrap since no alternative use is possible,” the Mayor told reporters on Sunday.

At present, accident-damaged cars, confiscated two-wheelers, and old jeeps are left unattended at several locations, including BJB Nagar. Officials noted that these vehicles not only consume valuable space but also create nuisance by becoming shelters for anti-social activities.

To address the issue at police station premises, the BMC will formally seek the cooperation of the Commissionerate Police. “Old jeeps and police vehicles will be requested to be handed over for scrapping. While the matter was discussed with the former Police Commissioner, a formal letter will soon be sent to the newly appointed Commissioner,” Das said.

According to the civic body, the planned scrapping exercise will help free up significant urban space while also contributing to the city’s revenue through sale of scrap materials.
