Chennai, 24 August (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to take immediate action to address the growing stray dog menace in the state. In a letter to the Chief Minister, BJP state spokesperson A N S Prasad requested strict implementation of the recent Supreme Court guidelines to manage stray dogs. The party's demand comes amid a surge in dog bite cases and rabies deaths in the state, with Tamil Nadu recording 6.42 lakh dog bite cases and 34 rabies deaths in 2024.

The BJP has demanded that the state government convene a high-level task force to oversee the implementation of stray dog management policies and establish district-level committees to ensure effective execution of policies at the grassroots level. The party has also sought strengthening of hospital infrastructure to handle dog bite cases, regular stray dog censuses, and strict enforcement of sterilization and vaccination drives.

The Supreme Court guidelines provide a framework for managing stray dogs, including sterilization, vaccination, sheltering, and prohibition of feeding in public places with designated zones for the same. By implementing these guidelines, the state government can effectively address the stray dog menace and ensure public safety. The BJP's demand highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue and protect the welfare of both humans and animals.
