Chennai, 23 August (H.S.) : In a significant bust, customs officials at Chennai International Airport have seized gold worth Rs. 95 lakh from a passenger arriving from abroad. The seizure was made after intelligence inputs suggested that the individual was attempting to smuggle the precious metal into the country.
The passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, had ingeniously concealed the gold in their luggage. However, the alert customs officials detected the suspicious item during a routine check and proceeded to inspect the baggage thoroughly.
Upon further examination, the officials found gold bars and chains worth Rs. 95 lakh, which were seized on the spot. The passenger was subsequently detained for further investigation and questioning.
This seizure is part of the ongoing efforts by the customs department to curb gold smuggling at airports. The officials are now probing the passenger's connections and networks to unravel the larger smuggling racket.
